Mirror, giving the camera type the "reflex" in Single Lens Reflex. Directly after pressing the release, the mirror is moved/tilted upwards to give way for the light coming from the camera lens (left) to the film (right from the mirror). In the current (standard) position of the mirror, it is in the path between the camera lens and the film, deflecting the light upwards on the focusing screen producing a picture of the photographed object thereon. This image is reflected via the prism above towards the viewer's eye.
Lens system in the camera lens, focussing the light coming from the photographed object on the film.
Plane of the film (not shown) during normal operation of the camera.
Prism for deflecting (two deflections on the inner sides of the prism) the image on the focusing screen towards the viewfinder and the photographer's eye.
Opening of the viewfinder, for placing the photographer's eye
focusing screen. The light coming through the camera lens is deflected by the mirror upwards towards this screen, on which an image on the scene in front of the camera is projected.
