Het eerste officiële wandelpad dat na het opheffen van de laatste vier ANWB Bondswandelwegen in 1970 werd uitgezet, was het Nivonpad (door Drente). De route die in 1976 in gebruik werd genomen, werd gemarkeerd met kwartronde paaltjes met een wit geschilderde kop en rode N. Nadat in 1980 de Stichting Lange Afstand Wandelpaden werd opgericht (nu Stichting Wandelnet), werd gemarkeerd met de huidige internationale markering voor Lange Afstand Wandelpaden (LAW). De witrode markering werd in verf of met een sticker aangebracht. Op de door het Nivon beheerde paden werd na 1980 nog enkele jaren een combinatie markering gebruikt van de witrode LAW markering met de rode N. Voor de kwartronde paaltjes betekende dit dat de LAW markering werd toegevoegd. Enkele Nivon paaltjes zijn nog terug te vinden. Zoals deze op het Drenthepad. De witrode LAW markering werd in 1995 vervangen door de geelrode Streekpad markering.
