| Description |
English: Newburgh: algal mats at the mouth of the Ythan estuary Prolific growth of green algae on the shores and mudflats near the mouth of the river Ythan is a serious ecological problem. The mats are the result of eutrophication - pollution involving the nutrient enrichment of the river water by artificial fertilisers from agricultural land in the river catchment. The algal cover causes mortality among the invertebrates that live in the mud and sand and also makes foraging difficult for the important populations of waders and duck that inhabit the estuary. |
