Summary[edit]

Author
Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood
Description
English: Nelson by Collingwood (left) and Collingwood by Nelson. Nelson and Collingwood met as lieutenants serving in the West Indies. Although Collingwood did not have the advantages that Nelson's family influence initially gave him in the Navy, they became firm friends. These are 19th-century reproductions of two simple portraits they made of each other in 1785 (PAJ3941, 3942): Collingwood’s drawing of Nelson is on the left, Nelson’s silhouette of Collingwood on the right. Promotion came Collingwood’s way eventually and he was Nelson's second in command at the Battle of Trafalgar.
