Daughter of the Son, Cherokee Myth

Summary[edit]

Description
English: In Daughter of the Son, the Sun's daughter lives in the middle of the sky above the earth. The Sun becomes jealous of the people on Earth, who cannot look at her without squinting. She tries to harm the people with her scorching rays, causing fevers and death. The people seek help from the Little Men, who send snakes to bite the Sun, but they fail. Eventually, they send Uktena and Rattlesnake to kill the Sun's daughter, which plunges the world into darkness. To restore the Sun, the people are instructed to bring her daughter back from the Ghost country, but they fail when they open the box containing her prematurely, releasing her as a redbird.
