Description
English: This oil on panel painted by the Duchesse de Berry depicts a chouan (a royalist insurgent) standing in front of an altar, wearing traditional costume and holding his gun. This is a memory of the tour that took place in summer 1828 in an effort to overturn public opinion, hostile to Charles X. As well as highlighting the duchess’s taste for the Middle Ages and her importance for the popularization of the troubadour style (exemplified in the original Neo-Gothic frame, awarded a medal at the 1827 industrial arts exhibition), this painting illustrates her skills as a painter of intimate scenes in a medieval vein. Known mostly for her role as a patron of the decorative arts, the Duchesse de Berry also practised painting, drawing, engraving and sculpture. She was taught painting by Storelli (1778-1854) among others.
