Locality: Poudrette quarry (Demix quarry; Uni-Mix quarry; Desourdy quarry; Carrière Mont Saint-Hilaire), Mont Saint-Hilaire, Rouville RCM, Montérégie, Québec, Canada
Size ~ 2½ x 2½ x 2½ cm. MOB coll.
A not so hot attempt to capture the (LW) UV response. To the naked eye, the makatite response appears strong greenish white SW, less bright LW (this photo). The pectolite is pink/violet/blue (mostly LW). But neither color is as saturated as this photo would lead you to believe. Unfortunately it’s the best I can do. I’m not a UV photographer.
However, my point is this: You would never mistake the UV response of pectolite for that of makatite. Hence UV response may be helpful in distinguishing makatite from pectolite specimens such as http://www.mindat.org/photo-449516.html which are often labeled “makatite”. Unfortunately, the UV response of both makatite and pectolite is sometimes weak or non-existent. So the UV test won’t work in such cases.
