English: Japanese naval ensign (1889-1945, after 1954) Japanese naval ensign, 1889-1945, and after 1954. The ensign is made of wool bunting, with a cotton hoist. It is machine sewn at the ends, the top and bottom sides of the flag are selvedge edges and the design is entirely printed. The flag has a white field with a red sun to the hoist side of centre with 16 rays to the edge. A rope and toggle is attached to hoist the ensign. '1 JAPAN' is stencilled on the hoist. The design was adopted in 1889. The Treaty of San Francisco in 1945 prevented Japan from having its own armed forces immediately after the Second World War but the naval ensign was readopted in 1954 for use by Japanese maritime self defence forces. |
