A fresco depicting The Three Graces, sister goddesses Aglaia (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer), daughters of Zeus and escorts of Apollo drawn by Henri Roux The Elder

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Three Graces were the beautiful sister goddesses Aglaia (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer), daughters of Zeus and escorts of Apollo. They served Aphrodite, the goddess of love and personified grace, beauty, and wisdom. They lived on Mount Olympus and thought to spread the joy of nature. A fresco depicting the Three Graces was found in the House of T. Dentatus Panthera in Pompeii.

Translated related text: "We recognize these three goddesses, more beautiful than beauty itself, who, according to the poets, give birth among men to all sweetness and all joy, and without which the gods do not north their dances and feasts. This painting, found in the excavations of Civita, July 28, 1814, represents the three daughters of Eurynome, in a charming attitude, in truth, but already known by a crowd of ancient monuments. (l)Pindar., Olymp., XIV.2nd Series. — Paintings. 2 PAINTINGS. What's most curious about it are some entirely new attributes. We are not talking about the crowns of flowers that hold this beautiful hair elegantly raised: this adornment is common to a host of divinities. But the objects which the Charities hold in their hands, and which seem to fix their attention, recall in a very piquant manner the group of marble which Pausanias saw in Elis."

3 EXPLICATION DES PLANCHES, pawoaa& 2e «me. TABLEAUX. PLANCHE 91.
