"Aus dem Todesjahr des Künstlers ist das große Gemälde ein Beispiel für die Monumentalität und Reduktion, die seinen späten Stil kennzeichnen. Unter Konzentratione allein auf die beiden Hauptfiguren wird die spannungsvolle Erzählung zu einem ganz verinnerlichten Drama zwischen der wortlosen Aufforderung des Engels und der einbrechenden Erkenntnis des Petrus."
