Summary[edit]

Description
English: Halls of Residence, Bruntsfield. Former school building, now converted into student residences by Edinburgh University. The building was originally Boroughmuir School. When that school moved to new premises at Viewforth in 1914, the building was occupied by the girls of James Gillespie's School who were seeking new accommodation (the boys were housed in a separate building in Marchmont). This is therefore the school attended by the writer Muriel Spark who lived in nearby Brunstfield Place. Her English teacher here, Christina Kay, became the inspiration for the main character of her novel, 'The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie', published in 1961 and set in 1930s Edinburgh. 1462511
