Description
Nederlands: De lengte, diepte en residentietijd van grondwater varieert veel. Grondwaterstroomlijnen (of -stroompaden) laten de weg van grondwater op een bepaalde plek zien. Het grondwater wordt aangevuld door neerslag, gevolgd door infiltratie en percolatie in de bodem. Hoewel neerslag overal optreedt, vindt percolatie en aanvulling van het grondwater alleen in aanvullingsgebieden (Engels: recharge areas) plaats. Het grondwater stroomt dan langzaam via gekromde stroomlijnen naar de plek waar kwel (Engels: discharge areas) plaatsvindt, normaal gesproken op plekken al beekdalen, waar afvoer via oppervlaktewater (een beek of rivier) plaatsvindt. De stroomlijnen worden afgebogen in slecht-doorlaatbare lagen (aquitards). De residentietijd van grondwater kan variëren van dagen tot millennia, afhankelijk van de lengte van de stroomlijn.
