Summary[edit]
DescriptionGreyfriars Kirkyard in winter - geograph.org.uk - 1629025.jpg |
English: Greyfriars Kirkyard in winter. Greyfriars Kirk takes its name from the Franciscan friary, founded by James V in 1436, which stood at the eastern end of the later kirkyard next to the Grassmarket. The buildings were partly destroyed in Somerset's invasion of 1547 and finally vacated in 1559 during the turmoil of the Reformation. In 1562, Queen Mary, doubtless under pressure, agreed to let the town council take over the friary gardens for use as a burial ground, the traditional site behind St Giles having become over-filled and a danger to public health. In 1601, the decision was taken to build a kirk on the site, using stone quarried from the derelict nunnery of St Catherine of Siena on the other side of the Burgh Loch. Progress was slow, the new kirk finally opening its doors for worship on Christmas Day, 1620.
