English: Rubens was the official painter to members of the Habsburg dynasty. He made a particular study of portraits of their great ancestor, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, by the sixteenth-century Venetian painter Titian, an artist he particularly admired. This canvas records Titian’s first portrait of Charles V (now lost). The Emperor is depicted as a knight, in full armour. (Permanent collection label)
