Deutsch: Elk Eber schuf das Bild "Der Meldegänger" im Vorfeld des Zweiten Weltkriegs, sicherlich nicht zufällig mit Bezug auf Hitlers biographische Erfahrung als Meldegänger im Ersten Weltkrieg. Das Bild im Stil des heroischen Realismus hatte eine propagandistische Funktion, und sollte Tugenden wie Kampfbereitschaft, Mut und Heldentum verkörpern.
