elevation to the main summit. The two other spurs project respectively Avestward and north, inclosingthe depression or recess which bears so striking resemblance to a hugecrater whose northwest wall has been demolished, as seen from thatdirection. Besides these, there are several large secondary spurs, thedisposition of which is an interesting topographic feature of the moun-tain. They form rugged ridges in the easterly face of the mountain, en-vironing at their heads little Alpine amphitheatres in some of whichnestle tiny lakelets, dammed by accumulations of debris through whichtheir waters percolate and form the spring sources of Iowa Gulch, oneof the main tributaries of McCoy Creek. The slopes on the west aremuch more uniform, a broad gulch penetrating this side between themain crest and that of the south spur. To the southwestward the moun-tain descends to a lower ridge, which extends in that direction into theadjacent district, defining the wide drainage belt flowing eastward into

A similar butlower ridge projects in the opposite direction, forming the before-men-tioned divide between McCoy Creek and John Grays Lake. The moun-tain flanks are well wooded with coniferous forests, and lovely little mead-ows are encountered in unexpected places between the lower and morerounded outlying ridges on the west side. The summit commands nearlythe whole of the southwestern section of the district, besides the exten-sive basin region to the southward. The country lying westward ap-pears surprisingly flat, notwithstanding we found it diversified by suffi-ciently rugged low mountain ridges, broad basin plains, and cauonedwater-courses. The Snake Eiver is hidden in the deep trough of itslower valley, but to the southeast, overlooking the comparatively lowintervening mountain belt, its southerly continuation opens out in thebroad basin of Salt Eiver, which bike all these basin
