“New York Nov 28th 1827
Friend Richard
We this day rec’d yours by favour of Mr Stuart, to whom we favor the amt of his draft 100 Dolls, also to White & Wright 100 Dolls Your note to A & P Willets being due was presented and paid before the receipt of your letter.
We wrote you on the 17th inst ( which you have no doubt ere this rec’d) informing you of the payment of the Bond & Mortgage also giving a statement of the Flour we rec’de and sold up to that date. We re’cd on the 23rd inst according to the count made by Capt Buel and myself the evening it was landed 409 Bbls Flour, but on ading up the day following when the balance unsold 54 Bbls was brought in store we could only make 402 Bbls If the first count was correct, (which we have little doubt of) there has been 7 Bbls stolen from the wharf. we have given information at the police office, and advertised them but without effect. When you again write you will oblige us by mentioning the quantity shiped. We have sold as follows from the wharf 100 Bbls at 6 Dolls payable 1st Dec @ 176 Bbls retailed to our customers at $6/8 18 Bbls [Super?] fine (Lee’s at 5 7/8 54 Bbls Lee’s fine 44/6 not being able to sell any more on the wharf the balance 54 Bbls were stored, and since sold 7 Bbls 6/8 and to MMLW Finch of Peekskill 41 Bbls 6 1/8 1Bbl Bad [illegible] $ 5 ½ half cash balance 90 days ading 1 ½ pr ct 5 Bbls delivered to A Glovers by your order making in all 402 Bbls We may err in judgement but our present opinion is that this lot of Flour is well sold. Though the canal has closed earlier than usual there is no scarcity of Flour and speculation has run the price too high to stand. Southern flour will be brought here in any quantity probably at 5 ½ Of your old lot of Flour 30 Bbls of the Base still remains on hand, the improvement in price of good does not effect it.
There is at present little probability of your last parcell arriving this winter, should you be so fortunate we will sell or store as may appear at the time most to your interest With esteem yours Edward G Faile & Co”
