English: Dwight Homestead, at Dwight, Belchertown, Mass., erected about or before 1798 by Justus Dwight (1739-1824) and Sarah Lamb (1737-1732). Destroyed by fire in 1870. Justus and Sarah arrived at the site in Fall 1769. Later the home of their son Nathaniel Dwight (1772-1860) and Elizabeth Dunbar (1782-1860), and the home of their grandson Harrison Dunbar Dwight (1806-1878) and Sophia Almira Cook (1820-1903), who were said to reside first in "the large wing at the right, which was added as a housekeeping apartment...The old house stood on the knoll opposite the [train] station.” ("Belchertown Sentinel," 12/19/1936) The Homestead burned in 1870 ("The Springfield Republican," 9/9/1870-“The house and all the outbuildings of Harrison Dwight at Dwight’s Station (Belchertown) were completely destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon.”) Another home was built, about 1871, on the foundation that remains at 841 Federal St. (intersection with Goodell St.) Original image in possession of Dwight family. |
