| Description |
The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. A French army under the command of Napoleon was defeated by the armies of the Seventh Coalition, comprising an Anglo-allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington combined with a Prussian army under the command of Gebhard von Blücher. This Duke of Wellington's (Arthur Wellesley) embossed commemorative card was found in the pages of one of Harriet Louisa Browne's diaries. Harriet was the wife of Thomas Gore-Browne a British colonial administrator, who was Governor of New Zealand from 1855-1861. Gore-Browne was Governor of St Helena at the time of the Duke of Wellington's death in 1852. Archives New Zealand holds some of the journals and diaries kept by Harriet Louisa Browne and also Thomas Gore-Browne, which hold some enclosed papers and photographs of their time in New Zealand and other overseas posts.
