English: The storm system which spawned the May 2009 southern midwest derecho, from its genesis over Kansas starting at 0:00 UTC 8 May 2009 until it passes over Virginia and North Carolina to the Atlantic Ocean at 23:55 UTC 9 May 2009.
Presented in a polyconic (American) projection with prime meridian at 90°W and prime latitude 38°N. This projection has constant scale along all lines of latitude (east-west), and was chosen as appropriate for illustrating a primarily east-west phenomenon. The time shown on the clock face in the video is UTC time starting at 0:00, 8 May 2009. Local civil time at the locations shown is from 4 to 5 hours earlier than UTC. The time span of the video in Central Daylight Time, in effect where the most damage occurred, is from 19:00, 7 May 2009, to 18:55, 9 May 2009. The date is not shown, but the change from 8 May to 9 May (UTC) can be determined by when the hour hand of the clock twice passes the 12 position (when the remnants of the storm are over eastern Kentucky and West Virginia). |
