Summary[edit]

Description
English: Concrete base on Oare Marsh I think this may be a relic of the two munitions factories that used to exist on this site. There are several similar rectangles mapped in the area in a regular pattern. The factories were the Cotton Powder Company, producing every kind of high explosive and, further west nearer Uplees, the Explosives Loading Company, filling bombs and shells with its product. In April 1916 an explosion of 15 tons of TNT and 150 tons of ammonium nitrate destroyed both factories and 106 employees were killed. It is said windows were blown out across the Thames in Southend and the shock was felt as far away as Norwich. Another major explosion in a munitions factory, with even greater loss of life, occurred in Nottinghamshire in July 1918.
