Title
English: Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad May Creek trestle, 1897
Description
English: In western Washington and other areas with plenty of timber railroad workers built wooden trestles to carry tracks across rivers and ravines. In 1877, the Seattle & Walla Walla Railroad built a tall wooden trestle across the deep canyon of May Creek, to get to the Newcastle coalfields. The line's successor, the Columbia & Puget Sound Railroad, replaced the trestle in 1897 when it changed from narrow to standard gauge track.

This 1897 photo shows the standard-gauge May Creek Trestle under construction. The older, narrow-gauge trestle (left) was said to be a record-breaking 130 feet high and 1,120 feet long.
