Description
English: Cockle Woman, Exmouth, Devon

The woman in this photograph is dredging for cockles, barefooted, at low tide on the shores of the Exe estuary. Exmouth’s docks can be seen in the distance. In the 18th century, Exmouth was a resort popular with prominent public figures, such as ViceAdmiral Horatio Nelson and Lord Byron. Today, the Exe Estuary is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, popular with birdwatchers as a site for wading birds.
