Summary[edit]

Description
English: Churchyard Yews - Easton Royal More than 500 churches have yews, some of which are extremely old. On-one is quite sure why yews are so often found in churchyards. It appears that some pre-date the churches themselves, perhaps being associated with former pagan burial grounds: the evergreen nature of the trees and their long lifespan may have provided a useful symbol for everlasting life. A more mundane explanation is that they were grown to provide bows for archers, and planted in churchyards to keep their poisonous berries away from the village livestock. We shall never know, but their gnarled trunks and sweeping branches of deep green leaves will always be a traditional part of the British churchyard.
