Description
English: Arms of Cary quarterly of 4 impaling Southcott quarterly of 4, being arms of Thomas Cary (d.1567) lord of the manor of Cockington in the parish of Tor Mohun, Devon, who married Mary Southcott, a daughter of John Southcott of Indio, Bovey Tracey, Devon, a clerk of the peace.[1] One of 5 shields on the monumental brass of his daughter-in-law Wilmota Giffard (1540/1-1581), St Saviour's Church, Tor Mohun, Devon. Now set into the north wall of the chancel. She was the daughter and sole heiress of John Giffard of Yeo Vale in the parish of Alwington, Devon. She married as her second husband George Cary (1541-1616) of Cockington, in the parish of Tor Mohun, Lord Deputy of Ireland 1603-4. See:
