Notes
  • Significance: Constructed in 1915 as a laundry facility for Tuskegee Institute, the building was apparently remodeled to a large extent in the same year, after which it assumed much of its present exterior appearance. In 1938, the Institute designated the building as the George Washington Carver Museum. From 1938 through 1941 Dr. Carver oversaw the conversion of the building into a combined museum and laboratory. In 1941 the museum was officially dedicated. Dr. Carver died in 1943. A fire originating in a basement student laboratory in 1947 resulted in heavy damage to the interior of the building. Following the fire the interior was extensively remodeled. In 1974 the National Park Service acquired Carver Museum as a part of the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site.
