Description

While on an inspection tour of the newly liberated Ohrdruf concentration camp, American soldiers view the charred remains of prisoners that were burned upon a section of railroad track during the evacuation of the camp.

The original caption reads "The charred remains of burned prisoners are shown shortly after capture of the area by Third U.S. Army troops. The Nazis exhumed and burned 1,606 murdered victims in six days in an attempt to destroy the evidence on orders from higher headquarters." Among those pictured are Jack Caminer (fifth from left with goggles), a German-Jewish immigrant, who served in military intelligence, and Staff Sergeant Maynard B. Cohen (eighth from the left, standing alone in the middle).
