DescriptionBritish Polo Day - Mexico 2014.webm |
On Saturday 29th November we saw British Polo Day - presented by Land Rover – return to Querétaro’s prestigious Balvanera Polo & Country Club, bringing together the pre-eminent families of the Mexican equine world to celebrate the ‘Best of British’. Hosts, the De Alba family, welcomed some of Mexico’s most influential figures in business and culture, as over 800 guests attended this, the third British Polo Day Mexico. Following lunch, players got the ball rolling with a quintessential - and rather amusing - game of Brompton Bicycle polo. In the first match of the day – The Hackett Cup presented- the Cordillera British Exiles took to the pitch for a closely fought battle against the host country, The C&H Mexican Polo Team. This was a thrilling match, which resulted in 12-8 victory to the home-side. After this fast-paced encounter, guests sat back and enjoyed a rather quirky take on a British favourite, with ‘afternoon tea and tequila’ – the tipple stamping a veritable Mexican flavor to the day! Feeling suitably refreshed, the home team - The Palacio de Hierro Balvanera - took to the pitch against The Hackett British Schools Team, both with the sought-after Land Rover Trophy in their sights! Despite some serious pressure and very fine play from both sides, The Palacio de Hierro Balvanera Polo Team were just too strong and claimed a 8-2 victory as the whistle blew at the end of the final chukka - after a fabulous and final goal by 1 goal player, Imelda de Alba. As the sun set behind the hills surrounding the beautiful Balvanera Polo and Country Club, proceedings drew to a close with the British Polo Day Mexico prize-giving ceremony. Spectators joined the Mexican Royal Salute Brand Ambassador, Tessa Rigley in a Royal Salute Scotch Whisky toast to the victorious teams – a perfect culmination to the day’s event.
