Frankfurt am Mayn : [Joannem Schmidt in Verlegung Sigmundt Feyerabends], 1580. The alchemical laboratory—because it had the power to separate precious metals from the baser ones they are typically found with—became an essential feature of the metallurgical enterprise. As the science of matter, alchemy had a wide range of applicability: from the chemical analysis and separation of alloys, to the preparation of powerful corrosives, to the distillation of spirituous essences and delicate oils, to the manufacture of dyes, to the preparation of powerful new medicines. Alchemy’s foundation was built on millennia of practical experience combined with theoretical frameworks that encouraged ongoing experimentation. And as the alchemists’ mastery of the chemical realm increased, so did their confidence that their most ancient goal, the transmutation of baser elements into gold, was within reach.
