Summary[edit]

Description
English: Advocate's Close lintels Carved lintels from 1590 expressing religious sentiments. Similar examples can be found in numerous closes in the Old Town. The practice of carving above thresholds appears to have reflected the belief that such mottoes would exercise a beneficial influence on the house and its inhabitants. They usually record the year, the initials of the proprieter and his wife, sometimes the owner's personal arms and a pithy scriptural motto or proverb.
