INTRODUCTION. XXxiu now very rare, contains (as will be seen) a delineationof Novaya Zemlya, there shown as an island of notlarge extent, and the surronnding regions. Thestrongly marked entire line along the western sideof Novaya Zemlya, is that of the coast as furnishedto Massa by his llussian authorities: the faint dottedline is that of the coast as corrected by himself orGerard from Dutch sources of information. Theproper names, as written in strong and faint charac-ters respectively, indicate, in like manner, the severalsources from which such names were derived. Inthis map a broad channel is laid down between theisland of Novaya Zemlya and a terra innominata tothe north of it, to which channel is given the nameof Matsei of tsar, which was evidently intendedfor Mat/eiof tsar, which again must be taken tohave been written instead of Matfeiof tsar, througha mere clerical error.^ The faint dotted line along la Collection des grands et petits Voyages, p. 254, in which, however,he has
