Summary[edit]

Description
English: Pharaoh's snake

- Mercury(II) thiocyanate is white flammable solid. When ignited it burns giving elemental mercury (probably a minor part of HgO, as well), carbon and sulfur as solid products, but also carbon dioxide and sulfur oxides as gaseous products. The gas products enable the formation of voluminous foamy solid product (mainly composed out of carbon and sulfur) that “grows”. Due to the shape of the foam and the way the reaction proceeds, the experiment is known as a Pharaoh's snake.

Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
