Summary[edit]

Description
English: Fire balls

As soon as the acid comes into contact with the KMnO4, small amounts of Mn2O7 are produced. Initially, the sulfuric acid acts as an acid, protonating the MnO4– ions to form HMnO4, which is extremely unstable and undergoes dehydration with sulfuric acid and Mn2O7 is formed. In fact, it is formed in situ on the end of the glass rod. When in contact, Mn2O7 oxidises the cotton wool causing it to ignite and burn rapidly.

KMnO4 + H2SO4 → HMnO4 + KHSO4 2HMnO4 → Mn2O7 + H2O

Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.

KMnO4 + H2SO4 → HMnO4 + KHSO4 2HMnO4 → Mn2O7 + H2O
