Summary[edit]

Description

English: A piece of lithium metal is added to a test tube filled with concentrated sulfuric acid. The test tube is placed in a jar with water for safety reasons. Highly exothermic reaction takes place. The metal first melts and then, due to the high temperature, starts to burn with а crimson red flame. The main reaction that takes place (there are side reactions, too) can be described by the equation:

2Li(s) + H2SO4(l) = Li2SO4(s) + H2(g)

Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
