Summary[edit]

Description

Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(g) = CaCO3(s)

English: Carbon dioxide is generated in a Kipp, by а reaction of marble chunks with hydrochloric acid (technical grade):

CaCO3(s) + HCl(aq) = CaCl2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

The gas is passed through a wash-bottle filled with a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide (limewater). After few seconds one notices that the liquid in the tube becomes milky white. This is due to the product’s low solubility. The chemical reaction that takes place is well known and can be represented by the equation:

Ca(OH)2(aq) + CO2(g) = CaCO3(s)

If CO2 is further bubbled through the solution that contains CaCO3; the solution clears up. The phenomenon can be explained by the formation of a water-soluble hydrogen salt:

CaCO3(s) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) = Ca(HCO3)2(aq)

Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
