Summary[edit]

Description

English: Small amount of sodium polyacrylate is added to a glass beaker (approximately 5 g for a 100 mL beaker). 100 mL of water is added to the polymer at once. The water is being absorbed instantly and the content starts to overflow. The material resembles snow.

This polymer can absorb water some 200 to 300 times its own mass. It is one of the superabsorbent polymer gels, whose long-chain polymer can expand to 40 times its initial volume. The absorption capacity is due to its capability to “capture” water molecules in its cavities via ionic interactions that enables the stretching of the polymeric chain.
