Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Borkenhäuschen in the New Garden, built in 1796 by court carpenter Johann Gottlob David Brendel (1753-1803), served as a kitchen building for the nearby shell grotto of King Frederick William II. The thatched round building clad in oak bark and crowned by an owl chased in copper is part of the program of picturesque staffages in the sentimental landscape park. The Borkenhäuschen, which had become inoperative and dilapidated after 1945, was demolished in 1958. Thanks to a generous donation from the Rotary Club Potsdam-Alter Markt, it was rebuilt over the preserved foundation and brick floor in 2010-2011 and clad with oak bark in 2012.
