Summary[edit]

Description
English: The image is showing bacteria on the surface of a mycorrhizal root tip, in a matrix of mucus and soil, so to say in their natural environment. We are trying to locate their position inside the "trinity symbiosis" of plant, fungi and microbial soil community. Our goal is to make investigations on the nutrient exchange (mainly C and N) of this symbiosis, in order to get a better understanding of plant nutrition in forest ecosystems, and furthermore to refine the role of this systems in global change.

All credits go to our working group at the Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science (Christina Kaiser (Division of Terrestrial Ecosystem Research, TER), Dagmar Woebken (Division of Microbial Ecology, DOME), Raphael Gabriel (Msc Student DOME), Marlies Dietrich (Msc Student DOME), Werner Mayerhofer (Msc Student TER) and our project (ROMY), as well as to the imaging lab (CIUS), at the University of Vienna. The image was recorded with a JEOL JSM-IT300, scanning electron microscope and corrected in brightness and contrast with Adobe Photoshop.
