Description110.
English: The apparatus for generating chlorine gas consists of a Würtz flask in which potassium permanganate is placed and a separating funnel mounted on the top of the flask for the addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The side-arm tube of the flask is connected to a gas bubbler filled with a solution of sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. When the acid comes into contact with potassium permanganate, a reaction begins followed by the release of a yellowish-to-green gas:
When the chlorine gas comes in contact with the solution in the gas bubbler a reaction accompanied by a release of energy in the form of light, takes place:
The energy released by exothermic reactions can also be emitted to the surroundings in the form of light. These reactions are called chemiluminescence. The cause of chemiluminescence can be explained by the distribution of electrons in energy levels. This phenomenon occurs when the molecules that are the products of the reaction are obtained in an excited state. When the excited state is of different parity concerning the ground state, the transition is forbidden and is enabled by collisions or in a similar manner. The mean-life of the excited state is increased by several orders of magnitude when compared with the mean-life of 'normal' excited states. As they return to their ground state, an energy photon is released in the form of light. The experiment was performed by Prof. PhD Miha Bukleski. The planning of the experiment also included the Prof. Emeritus PhD Vladimir Petruševski, Prof. PhD Marina Stojanovska and the student Mihail Trajkov, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
