Summary[edit]
Description105.
English: Red phosphorus is placed in the combustion spoon and the spoon is introduced into the flame of a gas burner. The red phosphorus lights up right away. The burning substance is then fed into the combustion chamber. It is noticeable that when the burning phosphorus is introduced in an atmosphere of O2, the burning intensifies. The reason is the same as that described for sulfur. Namely, the amount of oxygen in the reaction is five times higher than in air. During combustion, the reaction that takes place can be described by the equation:
The product of this reaction – diphosphorus pentaoxide is a white solid substance carried by the stream of O2. When in contact with water from the gas bubbler, it forms phosphoric acid. The acid neutralizes the base and the excess acid lowers the pH value of the phenolphthalein solution resulting in discoloration.
