Summary[edit]

Author
Jacobus Houbraken; John and Paul Knapton; Sir Godfrey Kneller
Description
English: 'Henry Boyle. Lord Carleton'

Half-lenght portrait of Henry Boyle Lord Carleton by Jacobus Houbraken after Sir Godfrey Kneller. The sitter is depicted in a baroque cartouche. Three sacks of gold coins and a mace are represented below, a reference to his tenures as Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor of the Exchequer of England.

Jacobus Houbraken was one of the most accomplished portrait engravers of the eighteenth century. This print was included in the "Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain", his most famous engravings for English publication, done in collaboration with the antiquary and engraver George Vertue and published by Knapton between 1743 and 1752.
