Во время пребывания в России шотландской художницы К. Робертсон ее основными заказчиками были члены семьи императора Николая I. В 1841 г. за большие (в рост) портреты императрицы Александры Федоровны и трех ее дочерей художницу избрали почетным вольным общинником санкт-петербургской Академии Художеств. По характеру своего дарования К. Робертсон была миниатюристкой: она умела тонко выписать лицо, передать фактуру тканей, хрупкость цветов, прозрачность стекла. Эти особенности ее стиля в полной мере проявилось в камерном портрете дочерей Николая I Ольги и Александры. Ольга Николаевна (1822-1892), великая княжна, с 1846 г. супруга Карла Фридриха Александра, принца Вюртембергского, изображена сидящей у клавесина. Рядом стоит Александра Николаевна (1825-1844), великая княжна, с 1843 г. супруга Фридриха Георга Адольфа, принца Гессен-Кассельского. Идеализация и сентиментальность образов позволяли строгим критикам говорить о "льстивой кисти британки". Тем не менее, К. Робертсон оставалась одной из самых популярных и высокооплачиваемых портретисток в 40-е гг. XIX в.
