Summary[edit]

Author
Lt James Henry Butt
Description
English: 'At Kelung, Formosa' [Taiwan]

No. 6 of 51 (PAJ2051 - PAJ2101): inscribed in capitals by the artist on the drawing, lower left, as title, although the word 'Formosa' has largely been trimmed off with the bottom of the sheet to make it fit the album page. The sheet is also signed 'JHB' in the lower right alongside the date '1867' written on the page alongside.

Kelung, or Kelung Harbour as it was then also known (now Keelung City), is on the north-east coast of Formosa (Taiwan), close to Taipei inland to the west. It is now the island's second largest seaport after Kaohsiung. Butt's view appears to be from the north of the bay that now forms the harbour. Houses are on the shore to the right and the ship on the far left may be HMS 'Pearl' the corvette which accompanied the survey vessel 'Sylvia' in which Butt was second lieutenant.
