Summary[edit]

Here's another example of a good rag thought to have been written by the famous composer Charles L. Johnson using a pseudonym. Research by ragtime historian Bill Edwards disproved the myth and found there was a real person named Ethel Earnist (some have misspelled the name as Earnest) originally from Omaha, Nebraska and later from Kansas City, Missouri. She is only known to have written this and one other score. Published by Charles L. Johnson in Kansas City in 1911.

"Peanuts" is popular among modern pianists, here are three examples: Performed by Elliot Adams and Tom Brier on two pianos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaqKaGJxgAs Performed by Vincent M. Johnson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0fJ7mX_dGE Performed by Sue Keller: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4cXGisCKJM

Original score source was from the Charles Templeton Collection at Mississippi State University at this link: https://scholarsjunction.msstate.edu/cht-sheet-music/12326/ This is a reproduction of the original score. Only change was in measure 61 where the left-hand sharp was shifted from the D to the F.

Score #252 in my current series "Women Ragtime Composers" featuring interesting selections written by ragtime era women. All are posted on YouTube at this link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwk68P83iuhvxDlLI_-Yi4g/featured
