The Egmond Gospels is a Gospel Book produced in Rheims around 850-875 and illuminated ca. 900 in the same region. Around 975 two dedication miniatures were added in Ghent when the manuscript was presented to the abbey of Egmond by Thierry II, count of Holland, and his wife Hildegard.

  • Location: The Hague, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, Ms. 76 F 1.
  • Material: Vellum.
  • Size: 234 x 207 mm. 218 pages.
  • Illuminations: 10 miniatures, 12 canon tables, 8 decorated pages.
  • Provenance: Presented ca. 975 to Egmond Abbey; still mentioned in the inventory of 1571; transfered to Haarlem, and afterwards to Cologne and in the 17th century to Utrecht; purchased by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in 1830 from the Oud-Bisschoppelijke Clerezij, Utrecht.
  • Content: Canon tables (fol. 10v-16); Gospel of Matthew (fol.16v-69); Gospel of Mark (fol 69v-104); Gospel of Luke (fol 104v-161); Gospel of John (fol. 161v-213); Dedication miniatures (fol. 214v-15).
