DJVu is a file format that is especially useful for book scans. See eg Image:Concessions in USSR 1928.djvu. I wrote a message on wikisource-l, hopefully someone will come and talk it up, because I don't know a lot about it. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tim told me that in the last week we had 2061 net new files (uploads-deletions). I'm going to assume that was an average week and not particularly high or low. Someone with some kind of DB access could figure out more accurate rates. That seems like an awfully low number and would average to only 100,000 new files per year. I suspect that intermittent bot runs cause growth in spurts. I suggest asking Gregory Maxwell to do some more growth analysis.--Eloquence 05:56, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Audio[edit]

All sound files at the Commons are encoded in either the Ogg file format or MIDI file format. Please see Commons:Media help for advice on what software is required to play these types of file. Alternatively, click "play in browser" for the Ogg examples below. Playing in browser requires Java.

Commons hosts several principle types of audio files - song/music, human speech, animal sounds and synthetic sounds. The first two have the greatest amount of content to date.


Human speech[edit]

The most comprehensive coverage at the moment is of human speech. This covers short pronunciation files (typically of words of phrases), recorded speeches (both present-day and historical), and recorded versions of written text. Recorded versions of written text includes Wikipedia articles (currently in eleven languages: Alemannisch, Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish) and books whose copyright has expired.

Category:English pronunciation contains over 4,400 files of native British English and American English speakers pronouncing words and phrases. These files are vital in Wiktionary, and can also be used by students of English for study of regional variation in pronuncation and minimal pairs.

Too long[edit]

Like most press releases, we've worked on, it's too long. In particular, I think we should drop much of the featured pictures section, maybe pick one example from each category? Opportunities to condense the text would be wonderful as well.

Also, we should clean up the contact information (Florence is chair now, not Jimmy). And having some Commons-specific press contacts, instead of just the generic group, would be nice. Well, if you get people with no experience to write press releases, that's what happens. Of course trim it however you or anyone else sees fit.
As for press contacts, what's involved? just an email address? I'm happy to volunteer for English, although I live in Australia... which for email probably doesn't matter. I'll contact User:EugeneZelenko (be/ru), User:Fred Chess (sv), User:Lmbuga (es/gl) and User:Shizhao (zh) as I feel they would make good contacts. I'd say replace the "Regional contacts" section at the bottom with "Language contacts", and add your name and email address there (phone if you're willing).
