"do not recommend the usage of national symbols for human languages"

Keichwa, I reverted your edit, because the language templates are universal and there is currently a discussion ongoing about using flags for this. However, the templates should be advertised anyway regardless of whether you like the flags or not since they can be easily modified to e.g. ISO language codes instead of flags. — Richie 19:12, 19 May 2005 (UTC)

As long as the discussion is ongoing, we should stop promoting the feature. Or please change the template to display {{german}} as {{german}} and {{english}} as {{english}} for the time being. --Keichwa 20:43, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
Please stop removing the news item from the community portal. It is completely neutral and does not mention flags at all. The discussion is just about how to represent language, not whether at all. Many people regard these templates as being very useful, especially in a multilingual project like the Commons. I reverted your edit again. If you still want to remove the news item, please ask for community consent at the village pump. — Richie 22:21, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
If you are just interested in the feature, I guess you do not mind if I edit the Templates? Not using flags for languages is important to me. --Keichwa 05:00, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
The Templates have become an important part in our work, so they should only be modified after community consensus is reached (in the village pump). This is what I'm trying to do at the moment. Please don't change them on your own. — Richie 07:06, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

Nice trick. I'm wondering who installed this feature in the first place. --Keichwa 07:29, 20 May 2005 (UTC)

Upload other files

I am working on a wikibook and I want to add some interactive content like a Flash or a Powerpoint presentation. But I can't even upload anything other than graphics or sound files. I really want to be able to eventually include a Flash that serves as a interactive quiz system or something, or include a ppt for download so the student can study interactively. Can/will wiki allow authors to include their own interactive content on the site in the future? Xiaodai 12:56, 8 July 2005 (UTC)

Please see this discussion about file types. generally, the Commons:Village pump is the best place for questions regarding the project. -- Duesentrieb 14:28, 8 July 2005 (UTC)

Documentation

Documentation on commons seems really poor. Can we have Commons:Templates linked to from here? There are probably lots of other really useful pages that no-one knows about. Secretlondon 17:38, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Commons:Gallery would also be good as I've just spent 30 minutes trying to find out how to do that.. Secretlondon 17:53, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Can we put this in the Community Portal

Graphics abilities Project (or User's Abilities or Abilities Babel)
For categorisation of users in function of their graphical/audio abilities on commons, and then find quickly help need to work more efficiently.

Choise the best title in english, this text is a [good?] translation of the french « Pour categoriser les utilisateurs en fonctions de leurs aptitudes graphiques/audios sur commons, pour ensuite trouver l'aide appropriée », please correct my english if need. Yug (talk) 21:08, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Nobody seem oppose to this. I added it for don't wait 4 months. Problem : The right side is now really longer than the left one. Yug (talk) 19:10, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

After you did improve the page and the presentation of the imformation (sorry currently it just looks like a mind dump) given there you can add it along side the other Commons projects. Arnomane 21:13, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I restored the graphic abilities explaination which is equal to Babel. See the comment in the history page of Commons:Community Portal Yug (talk) 21:58, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
Please make a project page named for example Commons:Graphics abilities and then consider a useful category structure but please don't mix the categories with tutorials entirely and the current layout of the project won't attract anybody participating. I believe as well that such a project is useful for Commons but the current pages are simply not ideal and will cause a lot of confusion for interested people. And of course please also make some thoughts how to avoid the silly babel hell of wikipedia (say: keep the number of babels as low as possible). Arnomane 22:06, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't want attract anybody, I want categorise by graphic skill. Only this is really need. Tutorials red link are a possible extension, not hurry. Yug (talk) 22:13, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

COM:QIC inclusion

please merge with featured pictures it helps nobody having two almost unused aproaches

  1. QI is much different from FP. Read the criteria, selection process, and see Village pump.
  2. It was proposed on VP and other places, feedback was positive and several people participated on developement of the process.
  3. COM:FPC are unused so much that I have problems viewing the page - when I try to load the page on my poor computer, the browser freezes and computer starts swaping for several minutes...
  4. COM:QIC are open for little more than one day. Hard to expect more usage.
Well it does not help if people create parallel structures without thinking what to do with the old failed attemps and how to integrate them and the people that used them into a better solution. Wikimedia Commons has a very very small active community that's why some sub project does not work the same way as in Wikipedia. This is really not in order to annoy you but to make sure that your improvement ideas do not get neglected soon. Arnomane 23:50, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
FP are not failed attempt.
QI have different target than FP, its not parallel structure, but almost orthogonal structure.
There was some thinking behind QI creation and developement.
If your way of disscussion is Commons standard, I have to say I'm unfamiliar with it, and I doubt it has anything to do with size. I won't revert it again ...as for my understanding for wiki goes, the presence or absence of the link won't influence QI progress much. --Wikimol 08:16, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
While they are not the same, how about integrating these two things with each other? For example, they way for a picture to become "featured" could be that its looked at as QI, deemed very good, nomnated as FP and be looked at again. The people doing that could/should be largely be the same, and the pages and other infrastructure should be shared (where it makes sense) or closely linked.
Maybe it would even be possible to integrate the "picture of the day" selection - which is teh thirs such process we have on commons. To summ up: A "quality image" is different from a "picture of the days" is different from a "featured picture". But the processes should be closely integrated to avoid overhead and confusion. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 10:44, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
I'll first repeat the difference, as I see it / I would like to be. Feature Pictures resemble sort of photography contest (jury selecting some winners, often comparing candidates to competition, creative ideas are highly valued, its much about aesthetics) - of course done the wiki way. Quality Images should resemble the review process of a stock photo agency (one reviewer inspecting the image, wether it's the 8795th stock photo of the same subject is irrelevant, well defined techncal criteria are examined) - done in wiki.
Integration is interesting topic. If FP were subset of QI, it would be easy. But QI are limited to images created by commons user, while FP can come from any source.
Other difference is, in FPC aesthetic quality can sometimes outweigh technical problems, such as resolution. QIC should be more mechanical, either the image meets the criteria, or not. If not, it can still be nominated for FP.
Easiest integration would be with picture of the day - it can be demanded POTD must be either FP or QI. --Wikimol 12:53, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

It would be a good idea in any case to talk to people at POTD and FP; But anyway... why does QI only apply to pictures made by commons users? how about wikipedia users? Flickr users? Why not just apply it to all images? -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:59, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

is this the right place

Is this the right place to ask questions? If so, I am wondering if anyone could take images of anything related to the Japanese invasions of Korea? [1]. The article is not only incomplete, it does not have sufficient images to help the reader. If somebody could obtain copyrighted images of the war, that would be a great help, thank you. TripitakaKoreana100 01:03, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

No the better place for asking such a question is the Commons:Help desk or Commons:Village pump. Arnomane 09:02, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Photography Critiques

It seems like the Community Portal would be a good place to mention Commons:Photography_critiques which doesn't seem to get its deserved attention. It's a good page that allows for more feedback and discussion than putting something (that often you know is unsuitable) up for QIC just to get some feedback on one's work. Bureaucracy

Some times ago I wanted to add an image to your wiki. I asked the permission to the owner. I filled up the form. I uploaded the image (Image:Proofstep.gif)

Some times later it was told me in the most cryptic manner that there was a problem with the grants. Since there was no problem with the grants. And that everything was mentioned on the page I was a bit amazed. I asked on wikipedia. A very kind person answered that I hadn't filled the right part of the form. He helped me to fill it. I found it a bit strange to have to repeat twice the same information (namely the authorization) but anyway it was done.

And today I have just noticed that, despite of my careful attempt to fill correctly the form, the picture has been deleted. It was a beautiful picture. With some interest I think but for my own part I don't want to spend again an hour or two to try to guess what the ununderstandable bureaucrats of this wiki want. Too much work. I regret. I deeply regret but I give up. And I promise I will never try to add something on this wiki.

licence denomination and lack-of-choice problem

I find it difficult and untenable that, trying to understand the available licences (drop-down-menu) during the upload, you get a link to creative commons, where you feed the search-engine with the acronyms provided in the help-drop-down-panel: like "cc-by-sa, cc-by". the answer is just: nothing found! instead you find formulations like: "by-nc-sa" in their definitions-part ("cc" nowhere!). please change (update?) this! furthermore: I would like to license certain pictures under "by-nc-sa", and not make it entirely available, even for commercial use by others and any 'distortion'...! please make this possible! thank you!--HilmarHansWerner 12:17, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Licensing images as "nc" or "no commercial use allowed" is not compatible with the Commons' licensing policy and such images cannot be uploaded here. Anrie 15:55, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I have the same problem and have never got any straight answer. If the image was uploaded by your self and the image is not used in any Wikipedia sites (and you are logged in) it should be possible to delete it easy. Before deletion, there should be an automatic check procedure involved of usage so deletion is not made by mistake and before final deletion a warning- Do you really wish to delete the image xxxxx?. Now there is a lot of scrap on commons and it must be a good practice that all partcipants on Wikimedia clean up in there own backyard. Lidingo (talk) 07:43, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

My user page was deleted because it didn't follow project scope? That is what the deleting admin stated. My user page is for me, to describe me. My relationship to this project. Moving

I hereby request that this page should be moved to "Commons:Community portal". This variant is proper English, because general nouns are de-capitalized. Furthermore, the sidebar and the page itself already use the decapitalized version. Since "Commons:Community Portal" would be kept as a redirect, all links would still be working. However, before moving such an important page, I first wanted to ensure that the consensus isn't against this. Please let me know what you think of this plan. untitled

I am new and want to learn but have to admit that the "nose in the air," pomposity of some of the editors leaves me cold. I uploaded a picture that my community is interested in and the editor removed it because it didn't suit "him." Well just as in the arguments about language, the editors should not be so quick to delete photos that they personally don't like. I find it particularly offensive when my photo of a properly dressed wholesome couple dancing tango was deleted while simultaenously an average of 10 vulva photographs were accepted and I did not see the same editor remove those photos. Stop the hypocrisy. A crotch by any other name is still a crotch. Go clean up those photos and leave mine alone. That will allow me to learn the process but don't offend me as I walk in the door. I do not direct this to any one person. I am directing it to "all" editors suffering from airs of superiority. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rditucci (talk • contribs) 01:10, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

Wouldnt it be a good idea to encourage photographers to add some more information to their pictures. Even the svg's are mostly not very clear on their description page what is depicted and why. I want to inform myself about the naming of authors of picture authors in wikipedia articles. I know that the naming of article authors is quite imprtant. E. Is this category real a goal from commons or only error? - see Category:AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2014 --K@rl (talk) 08:30, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Commons:Community portal does not mention the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo 2014. This page is solely intended for discussion of the page Commons:Community portal. If you have questions not related to the contents of Commons:Community portal, please post them at Commons:Village pump or Commons:Help desk. LX (talk, contribs) 09:22, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

Hatnote

The "lede" of this page is titled "Welcome", and only addresses the "new to Commons" part of the community. Presumably the experienced editors already know "the ropes", but what of those less veteran (with a medium amount of experience)? I would like to suggest a second section (or paragraph) be added for such cases, which might detail when to use the "Help Desk" and when the "Village Pump", and/or other "semi-advanced" subjects. And speaking of the Welcome section, couldn't that "create an account" image be hidden if the user is already logged-in? -- Jokes Free4Me (talk) 18:30, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Shouldn't this be added here somewhere? I'd suggest to put it under Content organizationCreation and upload --El Grafo (talk) 07:33, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

OK, no objections, so I gave it a try [3]. Thought it would be reasonable to group this with Featured picture candidates etc. What do you think? --El Grafo (talk) 15:06, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

Section "Content organization" → "Improvements"

  • Suggest to remove Orphaned galleries and Orphaned images] from the list. It really doesn't matter if a gallery is linked from another page at Commons as long as it's properly categorized. I'd dare to say that the overwhelming majority of gallery pages is not linked from anywhere else and there's really no need to change that. The same is true for images: Who cares if an image is "used" on commons?
  • Suggest to add Media missing infobox template to that section, as that's something that really needs to be done.

Unless there are any objections, I'll be bold and make the changes in a few days. --El Grafo (talk) 13:38, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

Looks ok for me. Be bold :) --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:43, 19 June 2015 (UTC)

"User's graphics abilities"

This obviously doesn't belong into the "Policies and decisions" box, but where else to move it? Personally, I'd tend to remove it completely (or at least get rid of the link to Commons:Move toward Commons 2.0 !) --El Grafo (talk) 15:42, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Podzo and PODZO DI BORGO

I had post some pictures under my nickname Podzo (from 2013 to 2014), but I changed for PODZO DI BORGO. They are already credited for Podzo. Could you change pictures's author name Podzo by my name to-day PODZO DI BORGO ? Sorry for my bad english. Thank you for any answer. Bye. --PODZO DI BORGO (talk) 12:46, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Hey Folks, I'd like to propose adding the following social media accounts under the "Communications" section of Community portal.

How to Insert Babel Boxes?

I have tried. can someone help me with this issue? Thanks in advance! Thales Rodrigues de Miranda (talk) 16:39, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

It's hard to click the link "1" after "Archives:"

Maybe the link text "1" should be made longer on the talk page. 185.128.26.25 07:46, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

News

The "News" box hasn't had any new content since 2 December 2019. Perhaps this box should be dropped? --LukeSurl (talk) 10:02, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

News section dead?

The news section is empty. It appears that in the past, most of its content came from the WMF blog via User:SteinsplitterBot/Feedparser/mwblog-commons - which 1) has been empty since may and 2) has seen close to no updates since at least 2020. It's not a technical issue, there just haven't been any Commons-related posts on the blog for a while.

Since the @wikicommons Twitter account has been inactive since 2020, there's really not much use for the news section as it is right now. Can we somehow fill the gap or should we maybe just remove it? El Grafo (talk) 08:38, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Just realizing that this was noted by @LukeSurl in this archived 2021 thread. If there are no objections, I'll try to remember and just remove the section in c couple of days. (@Steinsplitter: FYI) El Grafo (talk) 08:44, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
Done. Unforunately, that increased the already existing unnecessary gap between "Communications" and "Content organization". Can't figure out where that comes from in the first place right now - any ideas? El Grafo (talk) 07:41, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
