Multimedia team update[edit]

Hi folks,

Just a quick note to let you know that the multimedia team is discussing this issue in tomorrow's sprint planning meeting, to see if we can take it on right away.

For now, I have filed this high-priority ’spike' ticket for evaluation by our team.

We will post another update here, once our team has had a chance to investigate possible solutions.

Thanks again to everyone on your team for taking on this issue!

Regards as ever, Fabrice Florin (WMF) (talk) 18:48, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great thanks. If not a fix, then an agreed work around so the uploads can progress this week would be super. (talk) 21:13, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Fabrice Florin (WMF): , see comment 10 on 52045. As suggested there, using one thread would make a run 1/10 the speed/volume of the NYPL maps upload that caused the issue this week. I'll give it a go on a limited run. If there are no issues I can at least then leave it to churn through the rest of the maps without much fuss, even if this then takes days rather than hours. -- (talk) 13:05, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear : Thanks so much for your proposal to do a limited run at a lower speed. It seems reasonable to me, but I do not have enough technical knowledge to comment on it. I recommend that you check with our engineering team lead Gilles Dubuc, who is spearheading the development of a solution to the image scalers issues that caused the outage. It would also be great if we could coordinate this projexct on the Commons or Multimedia mailing lists, and stay in close contact with each other, so we don't cause another outage :) Fabrice Florin (WMF) (talk) 17:27, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have written a quick summary, and suggested that Gilles join the conversation on the open glamtools email list, see here. -- (talk) 18:15, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Subcategories[edit]

Searching for something else I was delighted to find this trove but didn't look before leaping into subcatting for my homeland. Is there an overall plan or intention that may suffer complications due to my uninformed efforts? Jim.henderson (talk) 13:06, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest you think about contributing on the 'opinions' section of this project page, perhaps with some suggestions about post-upload housekeeping (using VisualFileChange or bot). When the uploads are done (perhaps only a couple of days left, it is hard to predict), I do intend to put up a public notice on the Village Pump, you can see a draft here. I suggest that the main category NYPL maps is a consistent parent category for all images, however category sorting and collating the images into folders for particular books of maps (and duplicate copies) is probably best left until all uploads are done, otherwise folks will find themselves having to keep on redoing the sorting. -- (talk) 13:20, 6 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Purple cast on some uploads[edit]

Is there a reason for the very marked purple cast on some of the images?

I see the corresponding Map Warper page [1] says the image is "in 2 layers". Could this be significant? Jheald (talk) 23:05, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
