Categorizing

I am not clear on how to categories my uploaded image. Could you please email the instructions to me, step by step, or you may categories it for me. I would need it to be place under the categorization of african american archbishops or archbishops in america. My email address is bishop7@sbcglobal.net. Thank you so kindly for your help and assistance.

The instructions are at Commons:Categories. I don't know if you think we have some secret set of better instructions that we only send out privately upon request, but that's not the case. What we have is there, and if you have specific questions, we can try to answer here. Category:Archbishops from the United States is probably where you should start traversing the category tree. Question from User:Ql3332 about photograph of public figure from Greece

[moved by User:Softlavender from incorrect discussion]

If I have permission from a copyright holder, may I upload a file to Commons?

The photograph is of a public figure, who has given permission to both the photographer and me to use the image for his Wikipedia page. The photograph was taken in Greece, and I am uploading it in the US. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ql3332 (talk • contribs)

I usually email the url of Commons:OTRS and explain free licenses to them. If the photographer agrees to a free license then I upload the image and put Template:OTRS pending on it. I then email them back with the file name/url and a link again to OTRS. Some manage to get the emails through before deletion but many don't. For the ones that don't then it is their loss.--Canoe1967 (talk) 16:14, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Permission from the subject is generally only needed if the photo was taken in a private place. Permission from the copyright holder (i.e. the photographer) is always needed, and please note that permission to use on a Wikipedia page is not sufficient. Wikimedia Commons only hosts content that is free for anyone to use for any purpose. As Canoe1967 mentioned, you need to follow the instructions at Commons:OTRS. FCNR accounts stands for Foreign Currency Non-resident bank account, is a fixed deposit opened by a Non resident Indian or Person of Indian Origin in foreign currency and can earn a regular interest on the same. The deposit is permissible only in six currencies

Uploading image of a monument of any other country than the one you live.

Is it possible to upload images of national monuments of any other country than the one you live? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiral2013 (talk • contribs) 10:56, 8 September 2013‎ (UTC)

Yes, Wikimedia Commons accepts photos taken in any country by people of any nationality. LX (talk, contribs) 11:08, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
Confer to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 and choose the country the monument is located in (not the country you live in) if you want to submit the photo as part of the contest. -- Rillke(q?) 11:41, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

uploading a file

Derivative file compilation

a compilation like this one

I recently tried to use Derivative Fx to upload a compilation of six different files from commons, however after the Derivative FX form was completed I was brought to the commons upload form which requires source information for all files,I tried to enter all of it but it dosen't seem to work. How should I upload compilation files like the one below to Wikimedia Commons?--Jamaican college grad (talk) 17:42, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

I and several colleagues at Wikivoyage have had the same problem. It is a serious inconvenience. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 08:27, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
Just tried it: Problem seems to be that it leads you to Special:Upload, where you are expected to enter all the information again. Instead it should probably lead to Special:Upload&uploadformstyle=basic, where you also need to enter the information again but at least can do that by simply copy&paste-ing all the source code provided by Derivative FX. Possible work-around:
  1. use Derivative FX to gather the information, but don't click on "Upload file". Instead, copy the code provided in the box below the "Summary:"
  2. go to Special:Upload&uploadformstyle=basic (bookmark the page in your browser or click on the normal "Upload file" at the navigation panel on the left, then click on Back to the old form, at the top of the page, then on Use the basic upload form at the bottom of the next page)
  3. Select the file on your Computer, choose a file name for Commons and paste the stuff you copied from the derivative FX output into the box for the summary (replacing the empty information template that is already there)
That's of course not very convenient, but at least it should work. --El Grafo (talk) 11:41, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

"Unknown error" when uploading audio files via Upload Wizard

Been trying to upload a handful of audio files (Ogg vorbis) for the past several weeks, but I keep getting the following message in the Upload Wizard: Unknown error: "unknown". I've uploaded audio files before with no problems. Sort of mystified as to why I'm unable to now. If it helps any, the browsers I've been using have been Sleipnir, Opera, Chrome, and Safari; I'm using Windows Vista. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! This an error message the developers can work with. I therefore forwarded it to bugzilla:53840. If you can, please upload the file elsewhere. There are free hosting services like sendspace; but pay attention not to transfer your copyright/exclusive usage rights to them and provide the link to the upload here, or if that does not work for spamblacklist, abusefilter, captcha and other restrictions, you can also e-mail me. This will enable the developers to reproduce and closely investigate the error. Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 09:32, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

Photo portrait subject owns copyright to photo taken by someone else

Where is the option for cases where someone else has taken a photograph of the relevant notable person and yet the relevant notable person owns the copyright to it (i.e., it is a work for hire) and wants to release it to Wikimedia? Please add a section for that. There's not even anything helpful for that yet, and yet it's very common. Softlavender (talk) 03:38, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

Were you not happy with the answers you got last time you asked the same question? LX (talk, contribs) 06:20, 3 September 2013 (UTC)
That was actually not the same question; it was a question about uploading a photo of oneself. This is a different question about public figures, not the uploader. Could someone please provide answer(s) to this question? Thanks very much! I want to make sure the instructions are correct. Softlavender (talk) 03:22, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
The same answer still applies. A scanned copy of the copyright transfer agreement, work for hire contract or employment record needs to be sent to our permission archive. LX (talk, contribs) 07:32, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
I'm more asking about the licensing template to choose. Can someone clarify which to use, and how exactly to word or alter it? Softlavender (talk) 12:50, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
I'm not so sure the same answer does apply. You say that the photo subject (a public figure) owns the copyright, and then say that the question is about public figures, not the uploader (so I gather the uploader does not own the copyright). That is, there are three different people involved - the photographer, the subject/copyright owner, and the uploader. Is that correct?
If so, it's a bit more complex than before (when the uploader was also the copyright owner), because now the uploader needs to send evidence not only that the subject holds the copyright, but also that the subject/copyright owner releases the photo under a free license.
Finding the right licensing template should be the easy part - just look for the one that matches the free license the copyright owner has chosen. --Avenue (talk) 14:54, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Failed uploads

when i go to my e-mail account to verify the down load it gives me this message "Invalid confirmation code. The code may have expired" and i am verifying within minuets of down loading when I try to verify don't know if this is because it always asks me to put in a new e-mail address every time I down load a JPEG file or what. when I try to re-download image it tells me that the down load has already failed I have several Photos for wiki loves monuments and have spent much spare time taking them I don't like wasting my time. Dagwin57 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dagwin57 (talk • contribs) 16:18, 7 September 2013‎ (UTC)

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. There is generally no need provide an e-mail address or to use e-mail to verify anything while when uploading files to Commons and certainly not when downloading files from Commons. Could you try to explain more clearly, step by step, what you're trying to do? LX (talk, contribs) 09:22, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

First I go to the Map and select the address I want to down load the image for it takes me to the upload wizard it down loads the image then it takes me to the copyright screen I push next then I get the describe screen ti always asks me for a different title than the one I have I push the next button then I get this message

"Wait! We need you to confirm your email address.

Without your email address, we can't contact you if you win. Click here to update your email address."

when I click there I get a screen that says "change email address" Even though I am logged in to my account and it asks me for my pass word then I get this message "We sent a verification email to the address you entered. Before your email address is confirmed, you will need to follow the instructions in the email." I go emediatly to my email account to verify and get this emailomeone, probably you, from IP address 173.30.24.38, has set the email address of the account "Dagwin57" to this address on Wikimedia Commons.

To confirm that this account really does belong to you and activate email features on Wikimedia Commons, open this link in your browser:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:InvalidateEmail/7a5e811d4add0fe0bcbecc52e9e29173

This confirmation code will expire at 14:00, 16 September 2013.

only twice has it allowed me to confirm my email address and the others it has not saying the email has expired when I try to go back and re-download the photos that could not be confirmed it tells me that the download has failed and it will not allow me to go any farther! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dagwin57 (talk • contribs) 14:11, 9 September 2013‎ (UTC)

Uploading Images using the API

Hello,

I'm trying to use the API for uploading a file to Commons, But with no success

I tested my code with a local installation of wikimedia, and it did work.

when i try to upload the file to commons, i get a 'Permission denied' error message, here is the var_dump of the curl session

[servedby] => mw1208
    [error] => Array
        (
            [code] => permissiondenied
            [info] => Permission denied
        )

Is there anything that restricts me from uploading the file ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rabin.IO (talk • contribs) 19:31, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

This means that you apparently are logged-in but that your account didn't have permission to do the upload. Did you try overwriting an existing file? This requires being autoconfirmed or confirmed. -- Rillke(q?) 19:55, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
No, i'm trying to upload a new image, i confirmed my email, and i see i'm part of the Commons:Users group. what do i need to become confirmed/autoconfirmed user ? --Rabin.IO (talk) 14:15, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
I suggest asking at #wikimedia-tech webchat or #mediawiki webchat. If you do not attempt to overwrite a file, you don't have to be (auto)confirmed. I am sorry that I can't help you any further here. I am just a volunteer and my spare time is limited. If you want to investigate yourself, the MediaWiki source code is openSource, can be searched and also most config is accessible there (mediawiki-core and operations-mediawiki-config will be of particular interest). -- Rillke(q?) 20:28, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi San, I think you are at the wrong place here: This is Wikimedia Commons, the place where the different language versions of Wikipedia (and many other projects) host their shared media files – stuff like photographs, drawings and so on. If you would like to add translated articles to the english language Wikipedia, I'd suggest to go over there, read en:Wikipedia:Translation and use en:Wikipedia talk:Translation or en:Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous) for your questions. UploadWizard should automatically convert the file, or am I missing something? --Stryn (talk) 15:50, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I have written a text about the research institute where I work (The Quality of Government Institute). I want to add the logo of our institute but I am unsure about the copywrite and licence rules. I have tried to read about copywrite rules and the different licence codes but it does not make me much wiser. Is there a specific licence code that should be used when you upload the logo of an organisation or public institute? I cannot see that there should be any copywrite issues as it is the logo of the institute where I work and I frequently use it when I make information posters, power-point presentations etc.

Thankful for any clarifications regarding this matter.

With kind regards, Alice — Preceding unsigned comment added by AliceJohansson (talk • contribs) 14:02, 11 September 2013‎ (UTC)

Unless it's geometrically very simple and/or consists of unadorned text ({{PD-ineligible}}), it's likely copyrighted under a non-free license and can't be uploaded here -- unless someone with authority in your organization wishes to formally release it under a free license, in which case go through COM:OTRS... -- AnonMoos (talk) 20:34, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
If we're talking about this logo, then that should be well below the threshold of originality in Sweden, meaning {{PD-textlogo}} (a more specific version of {{PD-ineligible}}) applies. LX (talk, contribs) 15:38, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

My broken Upload Wizard

So I stick by this moment and cannot go further with the uploading. Can anybody od You help and say what could be the cause? I reinstalled lately the Windows system on my notebook by it did not help for it. How to re-upload a recently deleted misnamed image

I accidentally tried uploading three different images with the same name (which was also the incorrect name) and ended up with two images which were exactly the same image and both incorrectly named so I had them both speedily deleted (File:Leiwater in Stellenbosch Dorpsmeent.jpg and File:Leiwater in Stellenbosch Dorpsmeent (shade).jpg). I was able to change the second name while uploading but it was actually a duplicate image. I later managed to upload the third image with the correct name (File:Leiwater in Stellenbosch 1.jpg). Now when I try to upload the other two again with the correct name, I get the error message "There was another file already on the site with the same content, but it was deleted." I have tried the Retry button and keep getting the same error message. Is there any way to override the error message? HelenOnline 16:01, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

That's because you should not speedy delete images that are improperly named. They can be moved. More information at COM:RENAME, {{Rename}}, Help:RenameLink.
Or to make it short: Either use RenameLink or place {{rename|The new correct name|1}} on the file description page of the two files you want to have renamed. I have restored them both, so you can click "edit", add the template (changing The new correct name to your desired name) and "save page". -- Rillke(q?) 16:20, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I have requested the undeleted one be renamed. Unfortunately I still cannot upload the last image again even though that one never actually got uploaded as far as I can tell. HelenOnline 16:35, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Not serious though, two is probably plenty. HelenOnline 16:36, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you the file that was previously deleted? Or is there a link in the error message? If not, the only way is, for example slightly cropping the file or re-encoding it by opening it in an imaging program and saving it under a different location/name. -- Rillke(q?) 16:53, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
It gives the same message as before, but the linked file was a duplicate with a different image. Don't worry, I have lots more photos to upload. HelenOnline 17:00, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Multiple images

The upload wizard won't let me upload 6 images (created by the USGS and EPA) at once, why is that? --Jakob (Scream about the things I've broken) 15:18, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Please provide the URL of the Upload Wizard you are using (because there are different configurations and wizards) and the browser name and its version. If you are not sure about your browser you can look it up here -- clientn and clientv are of interest. Thank you. -- Rillke(q?) 15:57, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
I can't tell the version, but I'm using Firefox. The url is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard. --Jakob (Scream about the things I've broken) 16:33, 19 September 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I can tell you that it works for me with Firefox version 23.0. What does the the line clientv: display (it's the 6th line below the categories)? And what does "doesn't let" mean: You cannot select more than 1 image? Only one image is uploaded despite you selected 6? -- Rillke(q?) 16:56, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Eumetsat Satellite Images

Satellite Images are most important to explain scientific concepts regarding the world we live in. I've read at the EUMETSAT website at (www.eumetsat.int.), that:

"Educational Use"1: any use of an item from the Meteosat Catalogue by a school, university, scientific institute or similar (private or institutional), solely for educational purposes, without transmission or redistribution of these data, products and services to any further third party, or use of them to generate a Value Added Service.

3.2 SAF SOFTWARE These include software packages created by the SAF on Support to Nowcasting and Very Short Range Forecasting, the Numerical Weather Prediction SAF and by the GRAS Meteorology SAF.

Access to these SAF software packages is granted to all users without charge, and against the signature of a licence agreement. They may not be redistributed. The SAF Host generating a SAF software will licence the use of the relevant software package on behalf of EUMETSATM.

However, I had some problems in uploading the 2013-09-20 image from Western Africa — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fev (talk • contribs) 05:03, 21 September 2013‎ (UTC)

Not 100% sure what you're asking, but that doesn't sound like a free license of the type required by Wikimedia Commons. AnonMoos (talk) 05:42, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Upload Wizard just rolls. It worked fine yesterday. Whats wrong ?--Ezzex (talk) 19:14, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Yes, confirmed by me at this time too. Just have to be patient I guess. Ayesha23 (talk) 19:38, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
The Upload Wizard is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. Have you tried Commons:Upload? It tends to be much more reliable. LX (talk, contribs) 20:38, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
I have used it for over a year. It have never been broker before.--Ezzex (talk) 21:34, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
I have to correct you, I have submitted more than 30 Bug reports (about issues, not including improvements), 5 commits by me have been merged of which 4 did "unbreak" something and there are still some in the pipe including substitution for a shim I had to add locally so users of Internet Explorer 8 do get a continue-button after they uploaded their files. Perhaps it was not broken for you but it was broken often enough for those who try to give support here.
If you are interested in what was broken this time have a look at this commit or search this IRC-log for [20:39:38] <darkweasel>. -- Rillke(q?) 19:56, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Server caching issue?

My first version of the file File:Horologium_constellation_map-bs.svg contained an error which I fixed later on. But when I try to upload this new version the end result still shows the old version of the file. Note that during upload, the preview image shows the correct change ("Mređa" -> "Mreža"). I've tried purgin the page (?action=purge) and even after multiple tries it still fails to refresh the image. Anyone any ideas what's going wrong? -- Edinwiki (talk) 10:58, 26 September 2013 (UTC)

Cf. Help:Purge (make sure it's not in your browser's cache) and follow Help talk:Purge#Alternative to advanced purge. -- Rillke(q?) 15:36, 26 September 2013 (UTC)
I see the file is now correctly displayed. (Btw. I tried already another browser to make sure it was not my browser's cache) -- Edinwiki (talk) 08:09, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Update with cropped image

I've a problem with uploading a cropped version of a file (File:TR7 Sprint engine bay right.jpg) I'd previously uploaded. While the new cropped file uploads, what happens is that where it is used, in Wikipedia the image in the article takes on the aspect ratio of the cropped version, but is still the original uncropped image, and thus distorted. However, if clicked on, the image displayed is correct. I've tried this twice, some while apart, and had the same results both times. I've reverted the image back to the uncropped version for now. --Graham.Fountain (talk) 14:52, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Own work?

If you upload a modified version of a file created by another contributor released under a Creative Commons license, should you say it is your own work or not? The- (talk) 21:26, 20 September 2013 (UTC)

I don't think that matters very much; what's much more important is that you should attribute the original image and author. AnonMoos (talk) 05:42, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Uploading a photo to Sandbox page I created

I have a Sandbox page saved that I am going to turn into an actual page when it is finished. I need to upload a photo to the page. The page is about a person, and the photo is of him speaking at a conference. I have the name of the photographer who took the photo; how do I proceed to upload this picture?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marshmadnesss (talk • contribs) 19:57, 24 September 2013‎ (UTC)

Character list for Grisham's The Pelican Brief

I listed all the characters as I read the book. I give away nothing in simply noting something about the person; eg., "Thomas Callahan 45; popular constitutional-law professor at Tulane University" I would like to donate this list but, being older than the Poipe, I was lost in your instructions. If you want it, I will highlight the major characters. The table is three pages long. Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a multimedia repository; we mainly host images, audio and video. Textual lists are best represented as wikitext directly on the project where you intend to reference it, such as the English Wikipedia project – though they might consider it trivia with no relevance in an encyclopædia. Uploading photos from Library of Congress collections

Hi, I found a great picture here [2] I want to upload to Wiki Commons for use on a Wiki article. Is there a tool that will extract the information from this photo? What I mean is, is there an easy upload form for Library of Congress photos? Thanks. Richard apple (talk) 00:30, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Don't think there's such a form (and it might be difficult to provide one which would handle the various collections and sub-collections on the Library of Congress site). I did a starter upload at File:Chaplin West Virginia 1938.jpg (someone who downloaded a TIFF from the site could upload a larger version). AnonMoos (talk) 02:07, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Uploading a picture I took of a book cover for an article

I'd like to upload a picture I took of a book cover and one of the pages within the book for an illustration in an article about the author of the book. Raquel Baranow (talk) 16:06, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

If the book is recent (less than a hundred years old, say), both the cover and the contents are probably copyrighted. Copyrighted works may only be uploaded here with permission of the copyright holder, under a free license. You may upload non-free images, subject to a number of conditions, at the English Wikipedia. --rimshottalk 17:12, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Raquel Baranow -- If a book cover consists only of a simple arrangement of brief text in an ordinary typographical font, or is a PD artwork with brief text over it, then it could be uploaded here, but in the great majority of cases book covers could not be uploaded here unless copyright has expired... Can't select the Country where the Monument is located

I have several photos of monuments that are located in the state of Palestine, West Bank region. However, I can't upload them because Palestine is not listed under Asia even though Jordan and Israel are listed, or anywhere in the list of countries. I cannot upload the images under Israel because this is not factually accurate as these monuments are not Israeli monuments. Please advise. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Westbankprojects (talk • contribs) 08:37, 29 September 2013‎ (UTC)

While Palestine probably does not take part in WLM, you are still invited uploading your photos to Wikimedia Commons. (Realize that Commons only accepts free licenses and as such everyone will be permitted to re-use your photos without having to pay for it, even commercially). For more information, confer to Commons:Licensing and Commons:First steps. Once you are ready to upload, you can choose an upload method from Commons:Upload. Specific WLM questions can be asked at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments/Help desk (like "Does Palestine really not take part in this year's WLM?"). Regards -- Rillke(q?) 09:20, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Why can't I upload mashriquladhkar_carmel_edited.jpg?

I'm trying to re-upload a file that was apparently deleted without me being informed some time ago (I don't know when), even though this file is my own photograph which does not break any rules that I am aware of.

Could someone please help with this?

Either you have to tell me where the other, previously deleted file is (use Special:Upload to get this information) or you tell me the SHA1 checksum of the file. -- Rillke(q?) 13:53, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
