Would it be possible for someone to create a page just for media in limbo? stuff only members can see, and then people can volunteer to check the image for copyright and all this complicated stuff??

or make a search engine that gives you more information about an image's source, and policies??

anywho, this is the current image I need help with.

thank you for any help. :)

Thepoodlechef (talk) 11:26, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Copyright is held by the creator of the image. In the case of your image it is the photographer or production company. Since your image has been previously published it would need a verifiable email from the photographer or production company. Commons has far too many images like this one uploaded from all over the net. Too many people think they are 'free to use' or 'public domain' just because they don't have a copyright notice on the image page. Most sites will have a 'terms of use' link buried at the bottom of the page linking to their copyright notices. Commons:Licensing is the main page that explains it. When the wrong files are uploaded they are hopefully caught quickly and tagged with {{Copyvio}}.--Canoe1967 (talk) 12:02, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

PD-CAGov

I tried uploading a PDF file using the upload wizard, but was prevented from completing the upload. When I indicated that it was not my own work and put {{PD-CAGov}} under "Another reason not mentioned above", the wizard responded that "This does not seem to be valid wikitext, or does not contain a license." even though {{PD-CAGov}} is one of the templates listed at Commons:Copyright tags. What did I do wrong? --Stepheng3 (talk) 04:55, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

The lack of response makes me doubt whether anyone still supports the Upload Wizard. I guess I'll go back to using the old form. --Stepheng3 (talk) 03:50, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
According to https://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/UploadWizard/UploadWizard.config.php?view=markup (line 244), the custom wikitext field must contain at least one template that is a descendant of Category:License tags. According to https://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/UploadWizard/resources/mw.UploadWizardLicenseInput.js?view=markup (line 553), the maximum search depth is 5. {{PD-CAGov}} is a descendant of Category:License tags via Category:PD-USGov license tags (non-federal)Category:PD-USGov license tagsCategory:PD-Gov license tags/Category:PD US license tagsCategory:PD license tags by author type/Category:PD license tags by countryCategory:PD license tagsCategory:License tags, but that's one level too deep. Tags in Category:PD-USGov license tags work just fine, while tags in Category:PD-USGov license tags (non-federal) don't. That's obviously not good, but I'm not sure if the most appropriate fix is to adjust the search depth or if our category structure should be simplified. LX (talk, contribs) 20:08, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Whom do I go to to request an increase in the search depth? --Stepheng3 (talk) 02:01, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=MediaWiki%20extensions&component=UploadWizard. But it would probably be quicker and easier to change our category structure. I checked, and the tags in Category:PD-USGov license tags (non-federal) are the only ones that should be affected by this problem. LX (talk, contribs) 17:04, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I've made sure the members of that category are dual-categorised, and put a note in the category. Rd232 (talk) 22:30, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Old upload wizard questions

Where is the old Upload Template (or Wizard)?

Last week there still was a link to the old template, which was so much easier to use. Where has it gone? Loranchet (talk) 22:39, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

Bring back link to the old upload form

You have no idea how frustrating this is. The New Wizard suddenly stopped working for me (I have NO idea why, I don't have any internet blocking software, I've tried three browsers, and no ad block) and now I can't get to the old form easily? The link to the old form was not intentionally removed. Its removal was a side-effect of a developer attempting to fix bugzilla:44682; unfortunately the fix broke the local UploadWizard config that's used on Commons, which resulted in the removal of the links as well as some other smaller breakage. It doesn't look like anyone who speaks Spanish is going to answer, so: Commons is a repository of free, educational media files. We don't host texts except in a few very specific cases. Source files

Moved here from Commons talk:Upload help#Source files. Commons talk:Upload help is intended solely for discussion about this help desk.

When it becomes possible to upload source files?

Source files are

  • Spreadsheets (Excel, OpenOffice, ...)
  • Source Code of Computer programs (Matlab, Octave, but also C, C#, C++, Visual Basic, ...)

They are used for the following things:

  • Generate Images, Graphics, Videos, Sounds
  • Generates wikicode of complex tables
  • Reliable primary source (not copied from another unreliable "source", but the exact culculation)

Currently Wikimedia only allow to upload secondary products. The primary data must be kept on the own computer, so

  • the information can be lost
  • no one can complete/correct these information
  • no one can prove the calculation

To my mind this should be solved. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frank Klemm (talk • contribs) 20:08, 13 March 2013‎ (UTC)

This has previously been sporadically discussed on Commons talk:File types (and its archives), among other places. Wikimedia Commons is for media (visual, audio, or audio-visual), not really data as such. A relatively small amount of source code or data used to generate an image can just be cut-and-pasted onto the image's description page (see Category:Images including source code in their description). A very large amount of data used to generate an image may not be fully compatible with Commons' stated goals and policies... AnonMoos (talk) 00:22, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Urbana, Illinois

Hello help desk,

I'd like to know how to upload images from our Sister Cities project files onto the Urbana, IL web page of Wikipedia, so that the image goes with our sub-topic category "Sister Cities". I successfully opened an account and added new text to this page today, but am not sure how to add a few photographs.

I'd like to remove the current photograph of the road sign. Can I do so? Or can I move it out of the Sister Cities topic area, where it seems to be inserted. How can I accomplish that?

Also, the photos which are most compelling about our projects have various individuals in them who assisted in building the projects. Your form mentions that people in the photographs should sign copyright releases. This is not practical (it would be difficult doing so esp. from African participants). Therefore, should I use only images of buildings or scenery, and without people? The story of the Sister Cities program is all about friendships and personal interactions, and leaving out the people is like leaving out the heart of the story.

Uploader trouble

Hi: I noticed this afternoon that the uploader doesn't seem to be working. From previous entries, I can see this isn't the first time this has happened, but I haven't seen any explanation for it--is this a temporary situation, or is it something I'm doing wrong? By "the uploader", I assume you mean the Upload Wizard? Basically, the people who put that in place, who are able to see if anything is wrong with it and fix it don't appear to be frequenting Commons, and those of us that do frequent Commons have very little ability to influence the workings of the Wizard. Have you tried using the old Commons:Upload process instead? It seems to be much less prone to breaking. LX (talk, contribs) 21:23, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Can I upload an image that is on Flickr with a CC-BY-NC-SA license?

Why am I asking? Because I recently wanted to do this, read the instructions on Wikimedia Commons which suggested this was NOT OK, so contacted the owner of the image to ask him to amend the license to CC-BY-SA. He replied saying he was happy for the image to be used on Wikimedia Commons (but did not amend the license information against the image on Flickr.) I forwarded this message to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, and was told " it was not strictly needed" since "[t]he preferred approach with Flickr images is to specify the license on the image, and that was done."

I now wish to upload another image, which I have created by adapting one I found on Flickr with a CC-BY-NC-SA license. Can you clarify whether or not I can simply do so, or whether I should seek the explicit permission of the owner of the original image?

Many thanks

Simontcope (talk) 17:14, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

No, content published only under a license limited to {{Non-commercial}} uses, such as {{Cc-by-nc-sa}}, is not accepted on Commons. For copyrighted content to be hosted on Commons, the copyright holder must approve publication under a license that allows anyone to use the content for any purpose. Permissions that only cover use on Commons are not sufficient; anyone must be able to use the content for any purpose, and if Commons is allowed to host the file under a license that makes that possible, distributing it elsewhere under a non-free license makes little sense. As for derivatives of a work published only under a {{Cc-by-nc-sa}} license, you cannot publish them under a different license without explicit permission from the original author. See Commons:Project scope/Summary and Commons:Derivative works. LX (talk, contribs) 18:04, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

Television screenshots

I would like to upload some television screenshots but am uncertain about how to do so without violating copyright. Is it possible to use any of these images: [2], [3], [4], [5] [6]? If so, who and how should I ask for permission? --1ST7 (talk) 20:10, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

See Commons:Screenshots. CBS isn't going to release their content under a license that allows others to use it for commercial purposes. LX (talk, contribs) 21:21, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
Can they still be uploaded for a Wikipedia article without using the Commons? --1ST7 (talk) 22:28, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
You'll have to check with the specific Wikipedia edition that you have in mind. For the English Wikipedia edition, the relevant policy and guidelines are at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content, and questions may be directed at en:Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Upload wizard doesn't work 3

I happen to have the same problem with the upload wizard as reported by Richardkw ("Upload wizard doesn't work", 28 June 2012) and Saibo ("Upload wizard doesn't work 2", 1 July 2012): In the midlle of the screen the standard gnome sign for loading continues spinning without end, i.e. the wizard fails to load. I tried several browsers (epiphany, firefox, SeaMonkey) -- neither does work. Any ideas what is wrong with my setting? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.60.36.94 (talk • contribs) 17:31, 9 February 2013‎ (UTC)

Adding uploaded images to articles

I have some recent pictures for the National Register of Historic Places that I will be uploading to Wiki Commons, and I would then like to add them to the pertinent articles. Do I add them myself, or does someone else do that?

Sorry for the question, but I'm only familiar with the procedure that was used during the NRHP contest for which there was a link to upload images for each place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cecouchman (talk • contribs) 16:18, 25 March 2013‎ (UTC)

No need to be sorry. You can edit Wikipedia articles yourself to add files that you've uploaded to Commons (unless, of course, you're blocked on Wikipedia or the article is protected from editing). I suspect that most files that are added to articles are added by their uploaders. LX (talk, contribs) 17:53, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

Location (Longitude/Latitude) Field

Why is it not possible to enter the correct data for 'location (longitude/latitude)? When I enter the correct data, the 'Upload Wizard' returns: "There are 2 errors with the form above. Correct the errors, and try submitting again." Does anybody here know how longitude and latitude are expressed? Please remedy, because it is quite annoying if You want to provide the exact location for an image, but You can't because the system does not acknowledge latitude and longitude the way they are used in Google Earth or anywhere else in navigation. What's up with that? Thanks for looking into this - whoever can change the field values to reflect the correct entry e.g. 154°54'37.43"W — Preceding unsigned comment added by Helenasophiahi (talk • contribs) 19:03, 25 March 2013‎ (UTC)

You need six numbers and two letters like:

{{Location|154|54|0|N|37|25|48|W}}

Or two decimal like:

{{Location dec|154.9|37.43}} --Canoe1967 (talk) 20:10, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

You cannot have 154 degrees North! Have you reversed the lat and long?

{{Location|37|25|48|N|154|54|0|W}}

Camera location37° 25′ 48″ N, 154° 54′ 00″ W Kartographer map based on OpenStreetMap.View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMapinfo

or omitted the latitude for 154° 54' 37.43"W which at 10° N would be {{Location|10|0|0|N|154|54|37.43|W}}

Camera location10° 00′ 00″ N, 154° 54′ 37.25″ W Kartographer map based on OpenStreetMap.View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMapinfo

How can I un-delete images

Hello I had many files deleted (list follows). They are all ok to be put as I have been requested to do so by the copyright holders for these two pages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Latour and http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Latour . Essentially the images are photos of works by Alfred Latour (1888-1964). The type of copyright should state "The copyright holder of this image hereby irrevocably releases all rights to it, allowing it to be freely reproduced, distributed, transmitted, used, modified, built upon, or otherwise exploited in any way by anyone for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. However, as a courtesy, a link back to © Copyright Fondation Alfred Latour. All Rights Reserved. would be appreciated." How can I put this type of copyright back on the images? Thanks very much in advance. Here are the list of images: File:"Paysage"_1938_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Camargue"_1941_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Rizière"_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Paysage"_1938_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Barque"_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Paysage"_1962_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Baudelaire,_Les_fleurs_du_Mal"_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Paul_Claudel,_Partage_de_Midi"_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Autoportrait"_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg ; File:"Reportage"_par_Alfred_Latour.jpg --Josephineemilie (talk) 23:15, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Since they were previously published then the copyright holder would need to email Commons:OTRS to verify themselves and the licence.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:12, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

How to upload a derivative work from another Commons file using the wizard

Hello, it may be an already-answered question but I wonder if someone could tell me how to easily upload a derivate work from another Commons file (say a translation of an existing map into a new language) using the "new" wizard. In the old form there was a clear option for it but I see no clear and simple way to do it in the new interface, though I suppose there is. Thank you in advance.--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 09:13, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

I do not think this exists. Needs to be implemented with high priority, though. --McZusatz (talk) 11:33, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
I see. I think it would definitely help to have some simple option in the wizard to indicate that the file being uploaded is a derivative from one already in Commons so that it could take the basic information from the source file. I tend to use the old interface for this but it sometimes fails and I suppose the idea of the new wizard is to get rid of the old interface altogether...--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 20:36, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
